Helical Tower in Canary Wharf - bioclimatic skyscraper
Tall Buildings project June 2008 Group 1B in the SBE Nottingham. Helical Tower in Canary Wharf, design by Andy Chapman and George Christodoulou. The design is for a bioclimatic skyscraper. "The 256m high Helical tower is mixed use, consisting of retail, co-working offices, business incubator, apart-hotel and residential apartments, with skycourts interfacing between 'villages'. Floorplates are optimised for natural light and ventilation, staggered and adjusted for each use. Each plate rotates 5 degrees to create a twisting tower. An atrium follows the twist a full 250 degrees, in an east to west path allowing direct sunlight into the helical atrium for each hour of the day. The core is the only straight vertical element, carrying primary circulation and services. Two helical maglev elevators follow the twist of the atrium. An exoskeletal diagrid lattice works with the core and floorplates to provide the structure. The helical form is ideally suited to resist resonant wind effects, and is completed by a massive Quiet Revolution wind generating turbine on the crown." Joint Tall Buildings Prizewinner
